Focus on B1 Preliminary (PET)

introduction

Focus on PET is an online course designed for students who are thinking of taking the Cambridge Preliminary English Test. It consists of 12 modules and 200 units of English and provides approximately 120 hours of study for students.

Course aims

  • Take students from Pre-Intermediate CEFR A2 up to B1.
  • Provide coaching and practice in all areas of the PET exam to ensure students are fully prepared when taking the test.
  • Blend grammatical structures necessary for this level with vocabulary, including verb + preposition combinations, spelling, reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

Grammar

By the end of the course, students will be able to…

      • Use present simple and present continuous verb forms as well as simple past with regular and irregular verbs in the affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms.
      • Talk about future prediction and intention using will and going to, and present continuous with future reference.
      • Use the present perfect simple to talk about past experience and actions that began in the past and continue in the present, along with adverbs and time references.
      • Identify things using there is/there are, have got, possessive adjectives and pronouns, articles, and the possessive genitive.
      • Talk about adjectives, including using comparative and superlative forms.
      • Create yes/no and information questions, and agree with someone in the affirmative and negative.
      • Use modal verbs such as can, could, must, should, may, and might.
      • Use adverbs of manner to describe how an action is performed.
      • Identify verbs that are followed by gerunds, bare infinitives, and full infinitives.
      • Use simple connecting words and basic passive verb forms.
      • Compare adjectives and adverbs using comparatives and superlatives.
      • Talk about quantity, including countable and uncountable nouns.
      • Use conditional sentences to talk about possible future and impossible alternative present situations.

Vocabulary

      • Learn approximately 1000 lexical items, including common nouns, verbs, adjectives, and simple lexical sets.

Skills

      • Exposure to and practice in reading and hearing formal and informal English from a variety of registers, contexts, descriptions, stories, and opinions.
