London Slang You Need to Know
Do you live in London, or have you ever been there? These 10 common expressions you need to know to understand born and bread Londoners.
1. ”The Full Monty”
this expression means the Full English Breakfast (sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, baked beans, potato cakes-hash browns,toasted bread and black pudding)

2. ‘”Mind the Gap”
This famous expression is always used on trains and the London Underground (Tube). The “gap” refers to the space, between the trains and the platform.Make sure you take a big step when getting off the train or tube, otherwise you can really hurt yourself!

3. “Spend a penny” or “Loo”
It means to go to the bathroom. It’s often used when people don’t know each other well, for instance in a business meeting, then they may say: ” I need to spend a penny”. Another word commonly used for toilet is “loo”.
4.”Quid”
This is another slang word for the British currency, the pound. You might often hear people say “quid” instead of pound, for example:” I paid fifty quid for the shoes”.

5. ” Not my cup of tea”
English are famous for being polite, so if they don’t like something, yet they don’t want to be rude, they will say:” I’m afraid that bungee jumping is not my cup of tea”.
6. “Ta”
It just means “thank you” the same as ” cheers”
7.”Moreish”
“I love Cadbury’s chocolate. It is soo moreish!”. This comes from ” more” and means that something is so good that you want more and more of it:)
8. “Grub”
The literal meaning is larva, but it has also another meaning – food. ” What’s for grub?” will mean ‘What’s for lunch or dinner?’
9. “All right , mate?”
‘Mate’ is commonly used by English people, when reffering to a man, especially in the pub. “All right, mate?” means ” How are you?”.
10. “Naff”
means very uncool, cheap looking – ” That shirt is so naff, you can’t wear it for the party tonight”.
