My students always enjoy this activity, because Mr. Bean is hilarious. I allow them to focus on fluency (not accuracy) and do their best. It’s a fun communicative way to end a grammar lesson on the present continuous\/present progressive.<\/p>\n

Use<\/h2>\n

1. We use the present continuous<\/b> when are talking about something happening now<\/b>, at the same time as we are speaking.<\/p>\n

2. We don’t use the present continuous<\/b> with these verbs:<\/p>\n

Understand<\/b>
\n2a. I don’t understand<\/b><\/span>: correct<\/b>
\n2b. I am not understanding<\/b><\/span>: wrong<\/b><\/p>\n

Want<\/b>
\n2a. He doesn’t want tea<\/b><\/span>: correct<\/b>
\n2b. He is not wanting tea<\/b><\/span>: wrong<\/b><\/p>\n

Like<\/b>
\n2a. We like this music<\/b><\/span>: correct<\/b>
\n2b. We are liking this music<\/b><\/span>: wrong<\/b><\/p>\n

Know<\/b>
\n2a. I know your girlfriend<\/b><\/span>: correct<\/b>

After teaching your students present continuous, put them in pairs. Have one student sit with their back to the video screen, and another student facing it.<\/p>\n

Present Continuous Speaking Activity Expansion<\/h3>\n

1) Creating warm-up questions<\/strong> about the topic of each video. For example:<\/p>\n

Do you make your sanwiches\/lunch yourself? Do you like buffets? Have you had food poisoning?<\/em><\/p>\n

2) Pre-teaching<\/strong> key vocabulary ( buffet, oyster, spoiled<\/em>, etc)<\/p>\n

3) Watching the videos a second time<\/strong> together and helping the students describe them more accurately.<\/p>\n

Next, load a short Mr. Bean video on the screen. I like to use this one – ”Making lunchtime sandwich” (6 minutes):<\/p>\n
