What does ”active” and ”passive” mean?<\/h2>\n
In the active voice<\/span>, the agent\/actor<\/strong> (person or thing doing the action) is the subject of the sentence.<\/p>\n For example:<\/p>\n And now , in the passive voice<\/span>, the agent is either unknown or less important, we focus on the action<\/strong> itself.<\/p>\n For example: “The postman was bitten”<\/span>. <\/em>(The agent<\/strong> is not known or not specified)<\/p>\n or “The postman was bitten by the dog”<\/span>.<\/em> (The agent<\/strong> “the dog” is less important here than the object<\/strong> ” the postman”)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In creating sentences in the passive voice,<\/span> it is important to remember that we use the third form<\/strong> of the verb , called past partciple. <\/strong><\/p>\n For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n VERB 1 – bite VERB 2 – bit VERB 3 – bitten<\/strong><\/p>\n “The postman was bitten<\/strong> yesterday.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The passive voice is more common in written English than in spoken one.<\/p>\n ” A new bridge is being built<\/strong> at the Hoover Dam”<\/span>.<\/p>\n “It is said that….”<\/span><\/p>\n It is believed that……”<\/span><\/p>\n The passive is used:<\/p>\n 1. When we don’t know<\/b> who performed the action:<\/p>\n President Bush was murdered yesterday evening.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n 2. When what<\/b> happens is more important than who<\/b> does it:<\/p>\n My car was badly damaged last night in a hailstorm.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n 3. When the person who does the action is people in general<\/b>:<\/p>\n Private Property. Trespassers will be prosecuted.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n Some real passive voice examples:<\/p>\n “Taxes will be raised<\/strong> next year” <\/span>(newspaper headline, radio news)<\/p>\n “The swimming pool is being closed<\/strong> because it is being cleaned<\/strong>“<\/span> (a notice)<\/p>\n “The concert tonight has been cancelled<\/strong> because the guitarist is ill”<\/span> (this is present perfect passive)<\/p>\n (complete the questions using the correct form of the verb and tense in each line, then answer the question.
