{"id":4677,"date":"2016-11-03T18:50:54","date_gmt":"2016-11-03T18:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadinka.webd.pl\/letslearnenglish\/?p=4677"},"modified":"2017-06-18T18:55:21","modified_gmt":"2017-06-18T17:55:21","slug":"what-is-the-passive-voice-and-how-to-use-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/el\/what-is-the-passive-voice-and-how-to-use-it\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Passive Voice and How to Use It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What do we mean by &#8216;voice&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<p>Voice is the form of the verb that shows whether the<span class=\"example\"><strong> subject<\/strong><\/span> of a sentence <em>does <\/em>the action (=the <span class=\"example\"><strong>active voice<\/strong><\/span>) or is <em>affected <\/em>by it (= the<span class=\"example\"><strong> passive voice<\/strong><\/span>)<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4678\" src=\"https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/12163229_f520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/12163229_f520.jpg 520w, https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/12163229_f520-470x268.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What does &#8221;active&#8221; and &#8221;passive&#8221; mean?<\/h2>\n<p>In <span class=\"example\">the active voice<\/span>, <strong>the agent\/actor<\/strong> (person or thing doing the action) is the subject of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4679\" src=\"https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/231507-5529-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"157\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And now , in <span class=\"example\">the passive voice<\/span>, the agent is either unknown or less important, we focus on <strong>the action<\/strong> itself.<\/p>\n<p>For example: <em><span class=\"example\">&#8220;The postman was bitten&#8221;<\/span>. <\/em>(<strong>The agent<\/strong> is not known or not specified)<\/p>\n<p>or <em><span class=\"example\">&#8220;The postman was bitten by the dog&#8221;<\/span>.<\/em> (T<strong>he agent<\/strong> &#8220;the dog&#8221; is less important here than <strong>the object<\/strong> &#8221; the postman&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4680\" src=\"https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Post2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"1074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Post2.jpg 760w, https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Post2-470x664.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How do we form the passive voice?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4681\" src=\"https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/passive.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/passive.jpg 638w, https:\/\/letslearnenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/passive-470x353.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In creating sentences in <span class=\"example\">the passive voice,<\/span> it is important to remember that we use <strong>the third form<\/strong> of the verb , called <strong>past partciple. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>VERB 1 &#8211; bite VERB 2 &#8211; bit VERB 3 &#8211; bitten<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"example\"><em>&#8220;The postman was <strong>bitten<\/strong> yesterday.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why use the passive voice?<\/h2>\n<p>The passive voice is more common in written English than in spoken one.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is often used in newspapers, in the media, and in academic writing or formal correspondence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"example\">&#8221; A new bridge <strong>is being built<\/strong> at the Hoover Dam&#8221;<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It also enables you to speak more neutrally about things, rather than using your own opinions:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"example\">&#8220;It is said that&#8230;.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"example\">It is believed that&#8230;&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also important to understand the passive voice when reading texts, to avoid misunderstandings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The passive is used:<\/p>\n<p>1. When <b>we don&#8217;t know<\/b> who performed the action:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"example\"><b>President Bush was murdered yesterday evening.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. When <b>what<\/b> happens is more important than <b>who<\/b> does it:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"example\"><b>My car was badly damaged last night in a hailstorm.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. When the person who does the action is <b>people in general<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"example\"><b>Private Property.
