Many times, the words that sound right are actually wrong. With words such as those listed below, you just have to memorize the rules so that when you are about to use them, you’ll catch yourself in the act and you will be certain that you have written or just said the right one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n
1. Accept vs. Except<\/strong><\/div>\n
These two words sound alike yet have completely different meanings. Accept<\/em><\/span> means to receive something eagerly: \u201cShe accepted <\/em><\/span>the gift graciously\u201d.
\nExcept<\/em><\/span> means exclusion, that sth is not included: \u201cI can attend every meeting except <\/em><\/span>the one next week\u201d.<\/div>\n

2. Affect vs. Effect<\/strong><\/div>\n
Both can be used as either a noun or a verb<\/strong>. Let’s start with the verbs<\/strong>.
\nAffect<\/em><\/span> means to influence something or someone; effect<\/span> <\/em>means to accomplish something. \u201cYour job was affected<\/em><\/span> by the organizational restructuring\u201d but \u201cThese changes will be effected<\/em> <\/span>on Monday.\u201d
\nAs a noun<\/strong>, an effect<\/em><\/span> is the result of something: \u201cThe accident had a huge effect<\/span> on her life.\u201d It’s almost always the right choice because the noun affect<\/em><\/span> refers to an emotional state and is rarely used outside of psychological circles<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
3. Lie vs. Lay<\/strong><\/div>\n
Den lie<\/em><\/span> is pretty clear , we all know that means 1) an untruth. Another usage of this word is more confusing. 2)Lie<\/span> <\/em>also means to recline: \u201cWhy don’t you lie<\/em><\/span> down and rest?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lie<\/em><\/span> is something you can do by yourself, but you need an object to lay <\/em><\/span>, <\/em>for instance: ” A bricklayer lays<\/span> bricks”.
\nIt becomes more tricky in the past tense<\/strong>. The past tense of lie<\/em><\/span> is\u2014you guessed it\u2014lay<\/em><\/span>: \u201cI lay<\/span><\/em> down earlier last night.\u201d And the past tense of lay<\/em> is laid<\/span>: \u201cShe laid<\/span><\/em> the baby on the bed.\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
4. Bring vs. Take<\/strong><\/div>\n
Somebody brings <\/em><\/span>something to you, but you take<\/em><\/span> it to somewhere else: \u201cBring<\/em> <\/span>me the mail, then take <\/em><\/span>your shoes to your room.\u201d
\nJust remember – if the movement is toward you, use bring<\/span>;<\/em> if the movement is away from you, use take<\/em><\/span>.<\/div>\n

5. Ironic vs. Coincidental<\/strong><\/div>\n
A lot of people get this wrong. If you break your leg the day before a ski trip, that’s coincidental <\/span>( bad luck). <\/em>If you drive up to the mountains to ski, and there was more snow than back at your house, that’s ironic<\/span>.<\/em><\/div>\n

6. Imply vs. Infer<\/strong><\/div>\n
To imply<\/em><\/span> means to suggest or show something, without saying it directly, for example: ” Are you implying<\/span> that I’m fat?”
\nTo infer<\/span><\/em> means to to guess that something is true because of the information that you have from what someone else implies. ” I inferred from<\/span> the number of cups that he was expecting visitors”. As a general rule, the speaker\/writer implies<\/em>, and the listener\/reader infers<\/em>.<\/div>\n

7. Nauseous vs. Nauseated<\/strong><\/div>\n
Nauseous<\/em> has been misused so often that the incorrect usage is accepted in some circles. Still, it’s important to know the difference.
\nNauseous<\/em><\/span> means causing nausea; you feel like you might vomit, and if something is nauseous<\/span>, it makes you want to vomit,
\n<\/b>wheareas n<\/span><\/em><\/b>auseated<\/em><\/span> means experiencing nausea, “He didn’t become nauseated<\/span> by the treatments at all. <\/em><\/div>\n

8. Komprimere vs. komponere<\/strong><\/div>\n
Det er to af de mest misbrugte ord i det engelske sprog.
\nOmfatter<\/em><\/span> betyder at inkludere bestemte dele eller numre; komponere<\/em> <\/span>betyder at g\u00f8re det godt igen. N\u00e5r man bruger omfatter<\/em><\/span>Du s\u00e6tter det hele f\u00f8rst: \"En fodboldkamp omfatter<\/em><\/span> (omfatter) to halvdele.\" N\u00e5r man bruger komponere<\/em><\/span>, du l\u00e6gger brikkerne f\u00f8rst: \"Halvtreds stater komponere<\/em><\/span> (udg\u00f8r) Amerikas Forenede Stater.\"<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
9. L\u00e6ngere vs. l\u00e6ngere<\/strong><\/div>\n
L\u00e6ngere<\/em><\/span> refererer til fysisk afstand, mens yderligere<\/em><\/span> beskriver graden eller omfanget af en handling eller situation. \"Jeg kan ikke l\u00f8be nogen l\u00e6ngere v\u00e6k<\/em><\/span>,\" men \"Han n\u00e6gtede at diskutere sagen yderligere<\/span>.”<\/div>\n
