when you have to learn something in a very short time (which might be complicated)

Context:

- Hi John! How's your new office job going?

- Oh, I guess it will be ok in a couple of weeks - if the boss still wants me!

- Why? Is it difficult?

- Well, it's all new to me and I have to understand the computers and software within the next 2 weeks but it's such a steep learning curve! I'll have to study in the evening.

- Looks like there's no escaping homework, even after leaving school eh!?

Notes:

Steep is used to describe a road that goes from low to high over a short distance

a curve is a bend or a rounded line on a graph

a learning curve is a graph of how much you have to learn over time
